Yandere and obsessive characters possess multiple similar traits. Yet, a closer look reveals that they have their own differences. A quick search online will show that their definitions are never concrete, and are often up to individual interpretations.
For the sake of consistency and organization, this site shall strive to classify these 2 archetypes using the below broad definitions:
Yanderes:
These personalities hold an unhealthy level of love for their love interests. Often, their focus is on possessing or obtaining their love interest, and to keep them by their side at all costs. They may actively seek out methods to achieve their objectives. These methods may be extreme and problematic, but the yanderes can be willing to execute them, even if it means causing hurt and grievance to others, their love interests, or even themselves.
Their deranged thoughts and actions stem mainly out of love for their love interests. They tend not to empathize with the plight and feelings of others. In the case for their love interests, yanderes may prioritize keeping them by their side even if the love interests are reluctant. In this sense, therefore, yandere personalities can be thought to be self-serving, and their love of a selfish form.
Obsessive Characters:
Similarly, these characters love their love interests to an unhealthy extent. They see their love interests as their top most priority, and treasure them as the most important in their lives. However, an obsessive character may be geared more towards having their love reciprocated, or giving their all for the sake of their love interests, rather than possessing them like the yandere.
Obsessive personalities can also harbor extreme thoughts and carry out drastic actions. What distinguish them from yanderes, however, lies in their motive and intent. While their actions out of love for their love interests may cause harm to others, such harm are usually committed unconsciously and without an evil intent. Often, these characters are able to empathize with others and understand their positions. While obsessive characters may still exhibit selfish and possessive behaviors, some may end up being the most self-sacrificing figure for their love.
This site strives to adhere to the above definitions of what yandere and obsessive characters comprise.
Please note that the above definitions are largely based on the characters’ disposition, motive and intent. However, due to the complexity or imperfect narrative of the characters, such qualities may not be entirely conveyed through their respective media. Therefore, the classification of these characters may not be entirely discreet. Nevertheless, the purpose of establishing a general view of the characters will be achieved regardless.
It will then be up to you, the readers of this site, to determine for yourselves if you agree with the classifications based on the objective sections of each character review, or by consuming the media yourselves. These differentiations are after all, subjective to personal opinions.
Discussions and deliberations of varying viewpoints are always welcome on this site. It would be interesting to observe how each featured characters may be perceived differently by the community. I look forward to participating in such discussions with fellow yando lovers in the future!
