Hayato is student who happens to be Naho’s crush. He excels at soccer. Although Hayato returns Naho’s feeling, he prefers to focus his attention on soccer training, and hopes that Naho will wait for him.

SPOILERS AND PERSONAL OPINION

Initially, Hayato was a shy and tender-hearted student who also has a crush on Naho. However, after the series of events which left him permanently disabled, he felt like he had nothing important left besides Naho. This prompts him to become twisted at the end of the manga.

Personally, I felt bad for Hayato, seeing how much he had loved soccer, only to be rendered handicapped as he tried to protect Naho. He is definitely a plot device used to increase the sense of horror at the end of the manga, since him turning yandere means that Naho ultimately did not managed to escape from these obsessions.
