Ling Yi Zhou is the CEO of the multi-million Ling Corporation. Xia Lin found out that Yi Zhou’s bone marrow is a match with hers and can be a potential donor to treat her leukemia. Yi Zhou, ever a business person, agrees only with one condition: that they enter a marriage of convenience.

SPOILERS AND PERSONAL OPINION

Of course, the contract marriage was a scheme by Ling Yi Zhou to keep Xia Lin by his side. Ling Yi Zhou had met Xia Lin two years prior. Even though they only had brief encounters, he quickly became interested in her. His personal secretary started providing Yi Zhou regular updates on Xia Lin, and he naturally knew when Xia Lin had anemia.

Treating this as an opportunity, he had Xia Lin’s anemia record switched out for a leukemia report. Then, he pulled strings to make Xia Lin think that he is the only suitable bone marrow donor for her, and tricked her into seeking help from him. He even tried to play hard to get for god knows what reasons, before he finally presented Xia Lin with a marriage proposal.

Eventually, Xia Lin found out about the marriage scheme. To prevent her from leaving, he trapped her in their apartment, hiring bodyguards to monitor her in case she went out by herself.

Finally, Xia Lin and Ling Yi Zhou managed to resolve their dispute after Ling Yi Zhou promised to control his behavior, and Xia Lin was willing to put aside his past wrongdoings due to her love for him.

Ling Yi Zhou truly loves Xia Lin a lot, and many of his actions for Xia Lin were totally swoon-worthy. As a yandere character, however, I felt that its portrayal is underwhelming. As the drama was portrayed in an overall light-hearted manner, it failed to convey the severity of Ling Yi Zhou’s actions. Things that could have very well put Ling Yi Zhou in jail were passed by with simple apologies. The horrifying train of thoughts that led to his manipulative ploys were left unexplored. Simply put, I think the yandere trope was carelessly thrown in, and was underdeveloped.
