SPOILERS AND PERSONAL OPINION

Nothing but You is a 24-episode romantic comedy, with each episode about 30 minutes long. The drama is very light-hearted, and focuses on the relationship between Jiang Lili and Lai Zheng Yi. Although they faces quite a lot of obstacles during their time together, many of them are resolved very quickly. The plot is simple and easy to digest. If you binge, you can probably finish it in about 3 days.
The drama starts when Bi Xiao Ran encountered a traffic accident and ended up in a comatose state. As she had a contract signing appointment to attend and it was very important to her, Jiang Lili decided to act as her twin sister Bi Xiao Ran and sign the contract for her.
As the contract was meant for a film production collaboration between two companies, and Bi Xiao Ran was to be in-charge, having Bi Xiao Ran’s presence throughout the collaborative project was crucial. As such, to continue the facade that Bi Xiao Ran was fine and working on the project, Jiang Lili had to continue her pretense and temporary fill in as Bi Xiao Ran until she recovers.
During her time in Le Meng, Jiang Lili was able to grow closer to her colleagues and improve herself as she took on her sister’s work. She also grew closer to Lai Zheng Yi, who is the CEO of Le Meng. While there were difficulties faced in their relationship, as well as troubles at work, everything managed to be sorted out, and show ends with Jiang Lili and Lai Zheng Yi heading for their marriage registration.

The past few months, I have been watching long dramas that were plot heavy and tragic. I kept dropping them. So it’s really a breath of fresh air to come across this light-hearted drama. Though cheesy, it’s not too cringey. The plot is simple and well-paced. And because each episode only last about 30 minutes, I am so glad that I am able to finish a drama for once.
Lai Zheng Yi is the perfect male lead. As the CEO of Le Meng, he is capable, decisive, and smart. In his family, he is a filial son and a caring older brother. As a boyfriend, he never once got angry at Lili for her silly mistakes and childish tantrums. Instead, he was always understanding and accommodating. Whenever Lili faces challenges at work, Lai Zheng Yi would always encourage her to solve the problems herself. But he would always be around to give her advise, or to catch her when she falls. Jiang Lili is just really lucky to have him.
Jiang Lili on the other hand, has too much room for improvement. Undoubtedly, she is cute and funny. But while I am fine with female leads being naive in relationships, I cannot stand them being naive in relationship AND dumb in everything else AND shows no improvement throughout the entire show. Her sister Bi Xiao Ran was supposed to be some super genius film producer, but with Jiang Lili in her position, all I see her do was sit in office and sign some documents. When trouble arises, she either fails to take care of it, or need to employ extensive help of others in order to solve it. Her contribution in any of these cases was to simply be present. That’s it.
Relationship-wise, Jiang Lili can also be pretty unreasonable. She gets jealous easily, and would not hesitate to give Lai Zheng Yi the cold shoulder. She even got angry at him when she thought he had a first love. (ಠ_ಠ) She also frequently throws tantrum when she feels like Lai Zheng Yi had neglected her. I really don’t understand how Lai Zheng Yi can be so patient.
The good (or bad) thing about this drama is that it also explores the relationships between other characters aside from the main leads. For example, Bi Xiao Ran and her faithful caretaker/admirer Qin Yan Fei, or Lai Zheng Yi’s younger brother Lai Zheng Ling with Bi Xiao Ran’s assistant Ding Dong. Personally, I prefer the drama to focus only on the main characters, so I naturally gave less attention to these scenes.
One notably frustrating character I must rant about is Lai Zheng Ling, Lai Zheng Yi’s useless brother. Lai Zheng Yi was adopted into Lai Zheng Ling’s family before he was conceived. Because Lai Zheng Yi was good at everything, while Lai Zheng Ling suck at everything and was a spoilt brat, their parents always scolded Ling and praised Yi, which pissed Ling off. When Ling was sent to Le Meng to “help out” his brother, Ling acted rudely towards his colleagues, thrashed Yi’s office, and even collude with some shady people which led to leakage of Le Meng’s confidential information. He did more dumb stuff in an attempt to “prove himself” but always ended up causing more trouble for others. Somehow, the others always managed to see the good in him and forgive him. And Ding Dong, the girl which he bothered and annoyed the most, ended up accepting to be his girlfriend. I can’t even…
Of course, there are also characters whom I like, such as Ding Dong, who was competent, calm, and collected. She was empathetic but also can be firm. In times of need, she was there to help out Jiang Lili, and had buddha level of patience towards Lai Zheng Ling.
There’s also Lai Zheng Yi’s parents. Unlike conventional rich parents in drama that always favor their biological son, they are fair and loving towards Lai Zheng Yi. When Jiang Lili was introduced to them, they also welcomed her with warm hearts and did not mind her social and financial status being drastically different from their son’s. This aspect was so different from your typical drama where the haughty rich parents will always be a roadblock to their kid’s romance. So I really liked it.
The pace of the drama was pretty well done, except for nearing the end which I felt was a bit rushed. The second male lead was introduced in episode 20 out of 24, so of course he won’t be causing any huge disturbance to our main couple. Some misunderstanding arose and was resolved quickly. Some much needed revelations and loose ends all were tied up towards the last 2 episodes, so it felt like everything ended before the climax was even reached. But because the overall tone of the show was very light-hearted, this point was relatively easy to overlook.
This drama is something I would recommend you to watch for destressing, and if you want a light-hearted show with yandere (also conveyed in a light-hearted manner). As the plot is quite easy to follow, you can even turn on the show in the background while doing something else. Double the efficiency!
