Tangqishi is Nyang’s mortal enemy. His father is the regent of Yuan, which gives him a high status in the palace and his country.

SPOILERS AND PERSONAL OPINION

As a young girl, Nyang witness how cruelly and sadistically Tangqishi murdered her mother, as it was a hunting game. Nyang was almost killed by him as well. Since then, she developed a deep hatred for him. It did not help when Tangqishi yet again played a part in the death of Nyang’s father, then the deaths of her dear friends from Koryeo. Thus, it is of no surprise that Nyang will never love Tangqishi.

When Nyang was disguised as a man, Tangqishi was quick to suspect her gender. He was the one to reveal her disguise and permanently end her pretense as a man. When he saw her dressed prettily as a woman, he was enamored. He also liked Nyang’s personality, feisty, sharp and able to stand her ground.

Despite Nyang’s unwillingness, he had wanted to keep her as his concubine. To achieve this, he tried to get Nyang ousted from the palace so that she would end up with him. When this failed, he insisted for eunuch Dokman to cast her out again. He also approached Nyang, promising her a better life with him should she accept his offer.

While Tangqishi had thought that his liking for Nyang is only shallow and fleeting, he quickly came to sincerely care for her. Eventually, he ended up falling in love with her, and was horrified to acknowledge his feelings. His father, the regent, had desired for Tangqishi to accomplish great things, and his feelings for an enemy would only spell weakness for him. Coupled with Nyang’s obvious hatred for him, he quickly realize that his love is futile.

Eventually, Tangqishi came to a conclusion: if he cannot have Nyang, he will ruin her. He was aware that Wang Yu and Togon both have feelings for her, and would not stand to allow her to end up with anyone else. Tangqishi knew that to reach his objectives, Nyang would have to die. If so, he wanted to be the one to kill her. He went full out against her, at one point almost achieving his wish of having Nyang die by his hands.

Fortunately for Nyang, he did not succeed. Instead, his family got destroyed entirely by Nyang, ending his family’s long reign over Yuan. Tangqishi himself got permanently blinded in one eye in a fight with Nyang. Ultimately, he died after of series of attack by Wang Yu, Nyang and Togon when he tried in vain to assassinate Nyang and Togon.

Truthfully, while Tangqishi can be sharp and perceiving at times, he mostly comes off as dim-witted and foolish to me. Lots of time, Nyang was able to gain an upper hand against him, and even his subordinates, such as Yom Byongsu, easily have the guts to plot against him. Nevertheless, I think his character design was cool, and he had an interesting role in the drama.
