Kouta Akiyoshi is a 16-year-old high school student, who is also Mayu’s next door neighbour.

SPOILERS AND PERSONAL OPINION

Kouta first got to know Mayu when he visited her family’s bakery as a little kid for trick or treat. They were next door neighbours. Since then, Kouta visited the bakery every year during Halloween.

As Kouta grew older, he slowly fell in love with the 8-year-older Mayu. Despite the age gap, he found Mayu to be incredibly kind and thoughtful of others. He loved her personality.

Over time, Kouta began to stalk Mayu, keeping track of Mayu’s schedule and whereabouts closely. Due to the close proximity of their houses, Kouta could easily look into Mayu’s bedroom from his own room. He used that to his advantage, surveying her frequently. He also kept a personal diary, which he used to document all of his thoughts and interactions with Mayu for over 10 years.

The two got along fine, and Mayu never knew of Kouta’s feelings for her. Eventually, Mayu began dating. When Kouta heard of this news, he was so heartbroken that he did not know how to face Mayu. This was actually the reason why he avoided Mayu’s gaze whenever they met, but Mayu mistakenly thought that Kouta was just experiencing a rebellious phase.

Fortunately for Kouta, Mayu’s date turned out to be a total jerk, and the two broke up soon after. Kouta was overjoyed, and immediately confessed his feelings to Mayu and asked her out. At a loss of what to do, Mayu pretended to agree to temporarily ward off Kouta. Blissfully unaware of Mayu’s inner thoughts, Kouta happily took this opportunity to steal Mayu’s first kiss.

Naturally, Mayu was scared by Kouta, but she also felt her heart flutter at such unfamiliar interactions. (WTF, tbh I would have been so creeped out in her place, I would move to the next country.) She tried to avoid Kouta, but was no match for his enthusiasm.

Slowly, through their interactions, Mayu discovered Kouta’s obsessive behavior. He knew which days of the week Mayu would take a break from the bakery, what flavor of coffee she liked, and even when she caught a cold and had to stay home.

Mayu was worried about Kouta’s behavior towards her, yet she can’t refuse him. When Kouta described his feelings for her, and elaborated on how he noticed her thoughtfulness towards others and her dedication towards her profession, Mayu became even more touched by him. So, even with such a weird neighbour, behaving in such a weird manner, confessed his weird love to Mayu, and even kissed her without her consent, everything is a-okay and they lived happily after.

… At least that’s what I understood from how the mangaka portrayed the whole story.

I really don’t understand how Mayu can just allow Kouta to keep invading her privacy and did almost nothing to resist it, even though she repeatedly claimed that it was scaring her? And not to mention the huge blush on her face every time she realized Kouta’s intense affection for her. Hello? Your young neighbour is stalking you and harrassing you every chance he gets, and it makes your heart flutter???

All I can say is that this girl has no survival instincts at all…

Ehem, anyways, back to the yando character.

Kouta is a crybaby. He always have a pair of big, expectant, sparkly eyes and a huge blush on his face. He is aggressive and intense, yet he doesn’t realize it himself. As such, he still manages to give off an innocent air.

I would say Kouta fits the cute obsessive type of yando character. He did things that made Mayu uncomfortable, but they were not intentional. When he found out about Mayu dating, he was upset and avoided Mayu, but did not do anything to break them up. So I would classify him as more of an obsessive character than yandere.

Personally, Kouta is not my cup of tea. But I do see his appeal for another group of audience. If you don’t mind a quick read, you can check him out.
