Vergilius is a mysterious young man who lives in a huge house, in the same city as the protagonist.

SPOILERS AND PERSONAL OPINION

The protagonist, known as the “Pale One”, fell in love with a mysterious man in the city as they came across each other along the streets. Having decided to confess, she approached his residence. The man did not appear to know her, but he was friendly enough to invite her into his house for tea tasting. The Pale One eagerly accepted.

As they walked through the hallway, the Pale One noticed that portraits of a woman who looked awfully similar to her were hung up all over the place. Their faces expresses all sorts of emotions, anger, fear, resentment, but never happiness. You can choose to ask the man about the portraits, or keep silent. After which, he will bring you into a room for tea tasting, where you can either confess your love directly or ask more about him first.

It is later revealed that the man, Vergilius, is in fact a vampire. Those who had survived the red plague turn into vampires, sustaining themselves solely on blood. Depending on your decisions, the Pale One can kill or be killed by the man.

In other scenes, the Pale One discovered that the city, shrouded by the red plague and an endless night, was in fact in a closed time loop where the same events just kept repeating themselves. Many succumbed to the torment of endless repetitions and lost themselves, but not the Pale One. Vergilius had loved the Pale One since long ago, but their endings were never good. While the Pale One forgets about the previous loops and starts all over again, Vergilius remembers all of their pasts. He had tried countless ways to approach the Pale One, but none of them worked out. This also caused him to develop the thought of killing the Pale One out of love on some occasions, because if they could not be together, at least he can be the one to ruin her.

Vergilius had also attempted to kidnap the Pale One. If the Pale One had sipped the tea he gave, you will find yourself locked inside one of the rooms in Vergilius’s residence. There, he will ask for you to provide your blood, and if you ask for his motive, he will reveal that he believes taking your blood with your consent can potentially be the key to resolving his curse. Since his curse is related to current state of the city, breaking his curse may even take the city out of its infinite loop.

If you complete all of the 5 initial endings, replaying will allow you to access the final ending. This time, the Pale One recalls their past, and she offers her name for the first time. Now, Vergilius no longer have to shoulder the weight of their memories by himself. They can face whatever is in store for them together, for better or for worse.

I think Vergilius is decent character. But I do not get much out of his personality; I couldn’t tell what his defining traits are, as the narrative focuses more on the plot than his character. Something I noticed is his uncanny similarity to Ukyo from Amnesia: Memories, and most importantly the plot that revolves around the both of them. I wonder if Vergilius and Duskbound was inspired by Ukyo and Amnesia?

In terms of his yandere traits, I shall say that they are quite mild. Although Vergilius did kidnapped the Pale One, it was to get her blood, not out of love (or at least, love is definitely not the priority). However, he did have thoughts of ruining her out of love, or claiming her as his. Again, these instances were also not thoroughly explored, which I understand is difficult for such a short game. Nonetheless, these reasons were why he is a minor yandere in my book.

As the game was tagged yandere on the itch.io page, admittedly I was a tiny bit disappointed, since I was expecting more yandere content. Still, you can check the game and the character out for yourself. I definitely welcome any discussions on this character!
