Clarence Ewan is a mysterious man who first met Jay Jin while she was on a vacation. He was later revealed to be an established arms dealer, and had been plotting against Jarte since early on.

SPOILERS AND PERSONAL OPINION

Clarence had his first interaction with Jay when she was in Venice. In reality, Clarence had known about Jay long before this encounter, and he had planned this meeting in advance.

Clarence was Jarte’s half-brother; they both share the same mother. However, while Jarte lives in prestige and wealth since birth, Clarence had to scramble for survival as he grows up in a harsh environment. All of this had made Clarence extremely bitter and jealous of Jarte. Worse, Clarence’s half-sister Greta also died indirectly due to Jarte. This made him hate Jarte even more, and he steeled his heart to seek revenge against him.

Through his research, Clarence found out about Jarte’s only weakness: Jay whom he had recently fell in love with. He was curious about her, so he looked her up and found her at her school. This was the actual first meeting Clarence had with Jay, unbeknownst to her.

To seek revenge on Jarte, Clarence sought to cause Jay’s death. Just like how Greta died before him, Clarence wanted Jarte to experience the same pain that he did. He collaborated with Luigi Calpetti to lure Jay to them and kidnap her.

The original plan was to kill Jay and leave Jarte heartbroken. But due to Jay’s mary sue character, Clarence suddenly couldn’t bare to kill her just after they had a short conversation. Thus, he decided to save her from the mess that he himself had originally brought her into.

Seeing Jay in danger, Clarence even threw himself in front of her and took a bullet for her! Just a few panels before, he had wanted to kill her, what even..?!

Anyways… the drama must go on, so despite Clarence’s valiant effort rescue the damsel, Jay still fell off a tall height and sustained life-threatening injuries. This fiasco strained the relationship between Jarte and Jay even though they managed to escape together, as misunderstandings between them piled up. During one of their fights, Jay separated from Jarte. Using this opportunity, Clarence kidnapped Jay yet again, this time to get another revenge on Jarte, and also due to his budding feelings towards Jay.

Clarence was beyond conflicted. He had finally steeled himself once again to make use of Jay to achieve his aim. Yet after spending just some time together, he had once again fallen under Jay’s mary sue spell and was deeply affected by her presence. He was thorn between treating her harshly as he would towards any other hostages, or treating her like a precious gem. He was in denial with his feelings.

Eventually, Jarte came to face Clarence in an attempt to retrieve Jay, but was unsuccessful. He was caught by Clarence and was at his mercy. In an attempt to save Jarte, Jay begged Clarence to spare his life. In response, Clarence agreed under the condition that she would sleep with him for a night. For one, he was eager to see Jarte wallow in guilt for Jay’s sacrifice. And although he wouldn’t admit it, he had also wanted to obtain Jay through this.

Very reluctantly, Jay agreed with his condition. However, before they even went through with it, Jay fainted out of fear. Nothing had happened between them, but Clarence lied that the deal went through. This lie made a huge impact on Jay’s life, and caused severe strain in the relationship between Jarte and Jay. Now, Jarte could not face the woman that he felt he had let down, and Jay thought that Jarte would not face her as he considered her dirty.

The continued strain on Jay’s mental wellbeing eventually brought upon a huge episode of depression on her, so much so that she had attempted suicide and almost succeeded. When Clarence caught wind of this, he finally realized that he had been in love with her all along. He was obsessed with her even though he tried to deny it, and this had caused so much harm to Jay as a result.

As Jay tried her best to start anew, Clarence stayed away from her after realizing what he had done. He had lost his directions and his purpose for living after he gave up on revenge. He lived everyday recklessly, as if he was seeking death himself.

Eventually, Jay’s health improved, and was able to live a relatively stable life. During this time, Clarence found the courage to seek out Jay a final time. During their meeting, Clarence apologized for his past actions and confessed to having developed feelings for her, only for Jay to express her utter disdain for him.

Upon hearing it himself, Clarence was clear that he would never be able to make amends with Jay for what he had done. To him, Jay was now the one thing he could not get over, and her declaration made living entirely pointless for him. Without Jay, he would much rather die. And since he thought Jay who had hated him would want him dead, he was almost about to shoot himself until Jay stopped him.

From then on, Clarence lived only for Jay. He was aware of the tension between Jarte and Jay that caused the two to separate even though they both loved each other. To make up for his mistakes, he made arrangements to bring Jay back to Jarte again so that they can have a chance to start anew.

Clarence mostly stayed in the shadow, away from Jay, but was always on a lookout for her wellbeing. When he knew that Jarte was treating Jay poorly, he confronted him and warned him against his actions. Before their wedding, Clarence learned of an assassination attempt to be made on Jarte, and quickly went to alert Jay and worked to prevent it so as to ensure Jay’s happiness. Towards the end, Clarence was willing to sacrifice his own happiness for Jay’s. He was content to see Jay happy, and that was enough for him.

When I read this manhwa when I was young, I really disliked Clarence for ruining Jarte and Jay’s relationship, and for treating Jay so poorly. I was stoked when he ended up falling for Jay, like “Yeah! That’s how you should treat my girl!”. Reading it again a decade later, I still disliked Clarence, but now more for how indecisive he is, like “If you want to kill her, then do it already!”.

I consider Clarence more of an obsessive character than a yandere for the reasons below:

  1. He had spent too much time in denial of his feelings to actually act upon them.
  2. While some of his actions were done to keep her by his side, his initial motive, or his priority, was to seek revenge on Jarte.
  3. When he finally realized his feelings, his desire to keep her safe and happy outweighs his own wish to have her with him.

No doubt Clarence was obsessed with Jay, as he had stated many times that his only reason to live was Jay once he acknowledged his love for her. I actually liked him more towards the end, as he redeemed himself by returning Jay the happy end she should have gotten with Jarte. No doubt, Clarence is one of the most important character in the manhwa. If you enjoy reading about angsty characters with a troubled past, this is the character you are looking for.
