Jarte is the ruler of the Roinne, a prosperous city state with high standard of living. Although young, Jarte is an excellent ruler and brought Roinne to great heights. Jarte was disinterested in relationships and only engrossed in work, but that changed when he met Jay Jin. From then on, he fell deeply in love with her, going to great lengths to pursue her.

SPOILERS AND PERSONAL OPINION

Jarte is the ruler of Roinne since a young age. His life is centered around work and he is perfect in his position, leading his country to wealth and prosperity. As a handsome young man who is royalty, he is the most perfect man that could ever exist. Women all threw themselves at him, but Jarte has never known love.

Then he met Jay Jin by chance on a business trip in Korea. It was love at first sight, he just knew she was his 100% perfect girl. He chased her down, in a foreign country, without knowing their language, without his wallet or his secretary at his side. Needless to say, Jarte got lost. Luckily, he was noticed by Jay. Since Jay could speak foreign language, they managed to communicate. Things got funny when Jay spent what little cash she had to treat Jarte to a chicken kebab which he was allergic to. Jarte passed out and was fetched away by his incoming bodyguards. This marked their first meeting.

Later, Jarte was back in Roinne but he could not forget Jay. He was unlike himself, dazing out and unfocused at work. Jarte decided that he had to meet Jay again. He sent flyers all over Korea, hoping that Jay can pick up on it. Fortunately for Jarte, they met again in Korea. They hung out and became fast friends, with Jarte loving Jay one-sidedly. He showered Jay with gifts, took time out of his busy schedule for her, and treated her the best he could.

Eventually, Jarte confessed his love for Jay. Jay initially declined. For one, she did not think their differences in status would work out. Second, she is still confused over her own feelings for him. Nevertheless, Jarte did not gave up, and urged her to accept an engagement at the least. He will give her time to accept him, and if it doesn’t work out, he promised to let her go. Moved by Jarte’s sincerity, Jay accept his proposal to be his fiancée.

Things did not go so smoothly for the would-be couple however. Jarte was way too busy for Jay, as he was always occupied with his duty as the ruler of Roinne. Jarte was always away without Jay, yet Jay could not have freedom. Due to her status as his fiancée now, she must never be out without bodyguards. Jay felt isolated and confined, in a foreign country with almost no friends. Jarte was over-protective, but not without reason. His own mother passed away after being abducted and shot. Jay understood Jarte after learning his past, and they made up.

Their happiness did not last long HOWEVER, as Jay really got sort of abducted after she saved Luigi Calpetti while she was out shopping. As if things were not bad enough, Jay ended up with amnesia from the incident. When Jarte finally found Jay, she was in an intimate position with Luigi and had totally forgotten who Jarte was. After she was brought back to Roinne, Jay continued to shun Jarte like the plague despite learning that they were engaged. Eventually, Jay decided to leave Jarte’s side temporary so that both of them can calm down. And guess what? Absence makes the heart grows fonder, and Jay realized during her trip that she loved Jarte all along. Guess that’s one way to solve the problem.

HOWEVER HOWEVER, more trouble arise when Jay was framed of being a mole planted by Luigi. Staggering evidence went against her, and Jarte ended up doubting her. Nevertheless, Jarte still tried to bail her out of the mess; he was willing to do anything for Jay’s safety even when he thought Jay was a traitor in love with someone else. Somehow, Jay decided that it would be a great idea to die trying to prove her innocence. So more drama ensued. Jay almost died, and she was left with PTSD which cause her to lose her drawing abilities. In a sense, it was neither of their fault, but Jay couldn’t help but blame Jarte for not trusting her when she was framed. Jay grew increasingly irritable, and got annoyed when Jarte got worried about her safety when she flew away to London without telling him. During their scuffle, Jay finally told Jarte that she wanted it to be over with him.

It would have been fine if things just settled down this way. HOWEVER HOWEVER, Jay got kidnapped yet again! And just when Jay thought Jarte would never come for her, in came Jarte, armed with all his specialized weapons and soldiers fighting tooth and nail for her safety. Even more drama ensued when Clarence the kidnapper offered Jarte’s safety in exchange for a night with Jay. More misunderstandings occurred and Jay thought that Jarte didn’t love her anymore, so she tried to commit suicide. She didn’t succeed of course, but after all these incident, she decided to run away from Jarte for good.

It would be great if it ended here too. Jarte did find her and tried to get her back, but ended up letting her go sake. BUT HOWEVER BUT!!! Jay’s family now got into some financial problems and Jay was threatened to go butter up to Jarte for help again! So Jay went back to Jarte, where Jarte forced her to stay with him and marry him. More misunderstandings and heartbreaks ensued before they finally decided to talk it out. Then they realize that they loved each other all along. Then they get married happily. The end.

I am sorry I am such a terrible summarizer. I think I only captured about 50% of all that drama. There’s just so much going on that I don’t even know where to start and how to end. And by writing it out, it really gave me an understanding of how overdone this whole manhwa was.

All along, Jarte had never wavered in his love for Jay. He was willing to sacrifice anything and do whatever it takes to get Jay. From the soft and sweet things like showering Jay with gifts to the scary acts like almost strangling her to “possess her” if she dies. I should also mention that on many occasions, Jarte tried to force himself on Jay. This I disapprove. Jarte is definitely not the type to love someone healthily. He is filled with flaws. I think the author was trying to create a perfect bachelor that struggles between protecting and hurting the person he loves, because he simply loves too intensely.

I am quite annoyed at Jarte when I first read this as a child. But on my second read a decade later, I also noticed how frustrating Jay can be. She was always wavering in her love. One second she is doubtful, one another hand she realized she loved Jarte. Then she grew uncertain, then she suddenly can’t live without him. Then she wants to give up, but later she wants to go back. If I was Jarte, I would have run miles away from such an indecisive girl. If Jarte was good at one thing, it was his consistent and never-ending love for Jay.

Not to mention how much Jay cries and shows her vulnerability, even to the point of victimizing herself. While I do understand that what she went through was extremely traumatic, I prefer a heroine that is not a damsel in distress. Sorry for the rant on her, I couldn’t find a better outlet.

Anyway, Jarte is a textbook yandere that ticks all the boxes for one. He obsessed over Jay, tried to force her to love him, forced her to stay with him, used blackmail towards the end, was over possessive, etc. Nevertheless, Jarte is not ruthless towards Jay, as he did tried to let her go once, and frequently look out for Jay’s feelings. To him, keeping Jay happy and content is also extremely important, other than having her by his side.

I do recommend you to check this character out as it is one of the early classic yanderes. The manhwa also have several other notable characters beside him. Although the story can be overly dramatic, it wouldn’t hurt to take a look.
