SPOILERS AND PERSONAL OPINION

Chang Yi first met Ji Yun He when he was forcefully sent into the Floral Valley by fairy Shun De to be disciplined, under the pretext that he had assaulted her. In truth, Chang Yi had saved Shun De when she almost drowned, but was met with malice instead as Shun De tried to force him to be her attendant.

Shun De demanded that the members of Floral Valley train Chang Yi such that he will speak human words, sever his tail, and give up his pearl. Seeing this as an opportunity to break free from the Valley, Ji Yun He volunteered to train him.

During the course of their interactions, Ji Yun He treated Chang Yi very well compared to Lin Hao Qing who was also appointed to train him. Instead of pain and torture, Ji Yun He looked after him and ensured his well-being in the Valley. Slowly, he opened up to Ji Yun He, and started to trust her.

Slowly, Ji Yun He managed to coax Chang Yi to speak, and even give his name to her. Touched by her kind and bold character, Chang Yi started to fall for her. To protect her, Chang Yi severed his own tail despite this indicating betrayal to his clan, and that he can never return to the sea. He also gave up his pearl to Ji Yun He, which holds a great amount of his own spiritual powers. All these acts mean that his powers are greatly weakened. As a merman stranded on land, Chang Yi had basically given up everything he has for Ji Yun He.

Having known his kind-hearted and pure nature, Ji Yun He also fell for Chang Yi. However, Ji Yun He soon learned that her body condition would not allow her long to live. As they plan for their escape from the Valley together, Ji Yun He begin to plan for an alternative. With Shun De after them, it is already very unlikely for both of them to escape together. Even if they were successful, it doesn’t make sense for her to escape with Chang Yi only for her to die soon after and leave him widowed. As such, Ji Yun He pretend to betray Chang Yi so that he would give up on her, even though she was the one who fought the hardest for him to regain freedom.

Believing that Ji Yun He betrayed him, Chang Yi was heartbroken. However, with Shun De still seeking him out and causing chaos across the plains, sealing his home (the East Sea) as punishment for his escape, he decided to seek power to set things right. Journeying to the North, he gathered many followers and garnered great support from other spirits in the Northern Plains.

With greater power now, he sought out Ji Yun He, who had been captured and imprisoned in the Immortal Master Manor. Although Chang Yi claimed to hate Ji Yun He, he had began to doubt whether Ji Yun He had indeed betrayed him, as several things did not tally. Also, in his heart, he still wanted to believe in Ji Yun He’s good.

Nevertheless, to keep Ji Yun He by his side, and to prevent her from betraying him again, he brought her back with him to the Northern Plains and kept her locked up on Hu Xin Island.

Although he claim to be locking Ji Yun He up out of revenge, it is clear that he still loved her, and his priority was to keep her by his side. Despite denying her freedom, Chang Yi cared deeply for her. This was evident from Ji Yun He’s residence, which was much better than Luo Suo’s (a trusted subordinate of Chang Yi) despite Ji Yun He being branded as a prisoner. Chang Yi also visited her everyday, and made sure she eat her meals and take medicine regularly for her ailing health. Chang Yi also went along with most of her demands except granting her freedom, such as getting the best coal for heating her residence, and allowing her friends to visit her and keep her company.

Chang Yi was devastated to learn that Ji Yun He did not have long to live. To prolong her lifespan, he kept his spirit pearl with her despite it being extremely important to himself. Even when Kong Ming (a medical expert) states that nothing can be done for her, Chang Yi refused to accept it and was ready to go against fate to save her life. Even when the misunderstanding between them was unresolved, his love for Ji Yun He was unwavering.

Unfortunately, Ji Yun He craved for freedom above anything else, especially since she knew she would not live for long. She attempted an escape, and was captured by Chang Yi. This time, Chang Yi imprinted Ji Yun He with the merman’s marking, which was usually used between lovers. The marking will allow both of their senses to be shared, and for Chang Yi to know of Ji Yun He’s whereabouts. As Ji Yun He was constantly suffering from excruciating pain and crumbling health, Chang Yi would also have to experience that as an effect of the marking. Nevertheless, Chang Yi was willing to share the pain, as long as he can keep Ji Yun He by his side.

Eventually, Ji Yun He could not take her imprisonment anymore, and tried to end her life. As Chang Yi felt that her life was in danger due to the marking, he rushed back to her abode even though it was his coronation as the Lord of the Northern Plains. Since then, Chang Yi did not felt safe to leave Ji Yun He alone, and resorted to moving into her residence to monitor her constantly. Due to her ailing health, he also brought in tons of furniture which were loaded with spiritual energy to help her. Nevertheless, Chang Yi still refused to grant Ji Yun He freedom.

Due to the disturbance to his coronation, the people of the Northern Plains was highly displeased with Ji Yun He as they believed they had led Chang Yi astray. They demanded that she be brought out and punished. This enraged Chang Yi, and he did everything he could to ensure Ji Yun He’s safety without compromising on the unity and harmony of the Northern Plains. In the process, he gave up half of his spiritual powers to placate the crowd, greatly weakening himself to protect Ji Yun He.

Even when Ji Yun He was framed and accused of betraying the Northern Plains, Chang Yi refused to let her go. Instead, Chang Yi had her imprisoned yet again in Hu Xin Island, even though he was extremely upset by her actions.

Eventually, it was Ji Yun He’s sacrifice and death that brought an end to their strained relationship. To resolve an approaching war between the Floral Valley and the Northern Plains, Ji Yun He ended her own life. Only then did Chang Yi felt remorse for his selfish acts, and since then, he refused to leave the Northern Plains, as it was the place of Ji Yun He’s death. He sealed of Ji Yun He’s past residence, and forbid anyone from approaching Hu Xin Island. He pre-occupied himself with work to escape reality, and drink himself to sleep hoping to meet Ji Yun He in his dreams. Often, Chang Yi would visit Hu Xin Island, reminiscing of their past together.

Luckily, Ji Yun He actually survived that day in war, and eventually met Chang Yi again. They managed to resolve the misunderstanding between them, and learned to be honest with each other. This time, they are able to face all obstacles together, and achieve a happy ending.

O.M.G.

Words alone can’t describe my love for Chang Yi.

It’s been a long time since I had fangirled so hard over a male lead. Before watching the drama, I felt uncertain about Allen Ren and his portrayal of the merman. However, within minutes of his acting, he had me convinced, and his character only grew on me since.

This particular yandere is very unusual. I have never seen one as sensible and caring as Chang Yi. Sure, he did lock Ji Yun He up and denied her freedom until her apparent death to keep her by his side. But throughout her imprisonment, he was nothing short of attentive. Chang Yi’s motive and distrust towards Ji Yun He was reasonable. Despite this, he did everything he could to maximize her happiness.

Rarely do I see a yandere that is so not selfish despite being selfish (a yandere’s compulsory trait). And after Ji Yun He’s supposed death in the Northern Plains, he totally regretted his actions and redeemed himself thereafter.

In the beginning, Chang Yi is the purest and kindest soul out there. The wickedness he had encountered after he got onto the land caused him so much grief, and that made him reserved and cautious later on. Nevertheless, his intrinsic nature, his gentle and tender-hearted self never left him. This can be seen throughout the show, and that is what made his character so endearing.

Even better, Chang Yi is just so cute! His interactions with Ji Yun He was simply too adorable. I really liked how innocent he is in the beginning when he first met Ji Yun He. A little bit of kindness and he would be happy. A bit of help and he would repay you in greater amounts. Not to say Ji Yun He, even I would give up everything to protect such an innocent soul.

I really recommend you watch this show. The chemistry between the leads was remarkable. I would definitely re-watch the drama again and relish their moments together. This show can easily be one of the best Chinese drama of 2022. And with such a cute and caring yandere in the show, I don’t see what’s there to hold you back.
