SPOILERS AND PERSONAL OPINION

* Note: This story features love between siblings.

The story begins with the murder of their grandmother, while they attended her funeral. There are hints that the murder was committed by Hayate, but the ending reveals the perpetuator to be Kaoru all along. She is the most vicious of the pair, despite having an innocent countenance, which misled many to believe she was oppressed by Hayate.

Kaoru is responsible for all the killings of their immediate family members. As their parents did not approve of the twins’ relationship, she sabotaged their car and caused an accident which killed them. When their custody was transferred to their grandmother, and she wanted to separate the twins by putting one of them up for adoption, she murdered her in cold blood.

Later, when a classmate, Hiromi Takatou, grew interested in her and tried to separate her from Hayate, thinking she was the victim, she ruthlessly stabbed him in the chest, effectively killing him.

Finally, it was revealed that the rumors of them being “suicide lovers” carries some truth. Both twins remembered their past lives, where Kaoru was supposed to enter an arranged marriage despite being in love with Hayate, her family’s servant. In an attempt to run away together, Kaoru was mistakenly shot. In the last moments, the two promised to be together in their next life.

Their wish came true, and the two were reborn together and twin siblings. Kaoru recovered her past memories sooner than Hayate, and was elated when Hayate eventually recovered his memories as well. Kaoru declared that she will always be by Hayate’s side, and that there is no more to fear, since they are bound by the red string of fate.

While Kaoru does have a yandere brother Hayate, she is the yandere-est of them all. Even though she hits all the mark of being a yandere, I don’t find myself liking this character much.

I think it is because Kaoru likes to mask her cruelty and viciousness with naivety and innocence. The implications of this are that her beloved brother ends up carrying most of the blames for her. Everyone thinks that she is the victim of her brother’s oppressive love, and that the brother is the heinous one that murders and terrorizes people. The reality couldn’t be further from that.

Nevertheless, the manga is a quick read and if you appreciate some sort of plot twist (although quite predictable in my opinion), do check the manga out.
