SPOILERS AND PERSONAL OPINION

While Xin Jia’s family looked well and perfect on the outside, it was dysfunctional in reality. As a child, Xin Jia was aware of this, and she did not have a happy childhood. She developed a liking for dolls since young, and played with them often.
Xin Jia has been infatuated with Han Chen since they were kids, and showed signs of obsession very early on. She would play house using a doll as Han Chen. Han Chen’s doll will be the husband, while she herself was the wife. When Han Chen’s mother and her mother light-heartedly asked what would she do if Han Chen don’t like her, Xin Jia reacted in an agitated manner, stating that Han Chen must like her. Else, she will find and catch him.
Unfortunately, even as children, Han Chen disliked her. Even when his parent made him accompany Xin Jia for a bicycle ride, he would find chances to sneak off halfway through. Nevertheless, Xin Jia still remained affectionate towards him.
Years later, when they had all grown up, Han Chen worked in the police force, while Xin Jia found employment in the science laboratories. However, Xin Jia still found time to accompany Han Chen whenever she could, much to Han Chen’s annoyance.
Once, Xin Jia duplicated Han Chen’s key without his knowledge when she went over to clean his house. After which, she went into his home without his permission to cook dinner for him, thinking that such act is acceptable. Needless to say, it angered Han Chen greatly.
Overtime, Xin Jia learned to suppress her emotions. When something upsets her, instead of expressing it, she would resort to self-harm, such as scratching herself on her arm. Overtime, living in a dysfunctional family and having her love perpetually unrequited took a toll on her.
It was unclear when it began, but Xin Jia eventually suffered from serious depression, and had to resort to large amount of medication to control her condition. In her state, she found the criminal organization, which she felt was the only place that have people who accepted and cared for her. There, she joined the group as the poison concoctor, and adopted the codename “E”.
When Xin Jia found out that Su Mian had entered Han Chen’s life, and they are getting together, she was furious. In an attempt to resolve the matter peacefully, she called Su Mian out, offering her favorite doll as trade for Han Chen. Unfortunately, Su Mian did not understand her intentions, and would not agree to the deal even if she did. Hence, the agreement fell through. Thereafter, Xin Jia would use the doll to vent her anger towards Su Mian.
Subsequently, Xin Jia also joined “S”, the leader of the criminal organization in the execution of his plan, which resulted in the memory lost of both Su Mian and Han Chen, and caused them to be separated from each other. Even when Han Chen suspects that he had a significant other prior to his memory lost, Xin Jia lied to him that such a person does not exist.
As an adult, Xin Jia has an entire house dedicated to an imaginary married life between Han Chen and her. She has a wedding portrait hung at home; the bride and groom’s faces are replaced with paper cutouts of her and Han Chen’s faces. This is accompanied by many other pictures of couples, each with the faces replaced by paper cutouts again, as if the ones dating in each picture were herself and Han Chen.
In the house, Xin Jia also made a baby room with a baby bed, where two baby dolls laid. She would pretend those dolls are her children, and would address Han Chen as their father.
As Han Chen became increasingly sick of Xin Jia, she tried to improve their relationship. Eventually, she was even willing to tell Han Chen the truth about what happened years ago, about his memory lost, who Su Mian is, and her identity as “E”, a member of a criminal organization. She was willing to confess everything as long as Han Chen agrees to spend a day with her, even if revealing such information will have dire consequences for her.
Ultimately, Xin Jia died protecting Han Chen from a gunshot by “L”, using her own body as his shield. In her dying moments, she was quickly pushed away by Han Chen as he attempted to sought out the perpetuator. As she spent her last breath calling out his name, Han Chen never looked back at her once, and she died alone in the scene.
I felt really bad for Xin Jia. For Han Chen’s sake, she ended up the way she is, and even gave up her life for him, yet Han Chen wouldn’t even give her a single glance. I had hoped that at least in her dying moments, she would have gotten some sort of concern by Han Chen, if it is anything to ease her a little. But, Han Chen gave her nothing of the sort, just a harsh push to get her out of the way after she threw herself forward to block a bullet for him. It is especially painful to watch, because her love for Han Chen is real, overflowing, and selfless.
If she had not loved the wrong person, she would not have reached such a bad ending. Really, Xin Jia is a tragic character.
