SPOILERS AND PERSONAL OPINION

The first meeting between Liu Wen Zhao and Yu Qi Ling was comical. Liu Wen Zhao was just standing under a shelter, deep in contemplations when Yu Qi Ling thought he was going to commit suicide by jumping into the river. In a haste to save him, she ended up pushing both of them off the shelter, and had to rely on Liu Wen Zhao to get back up. From there on, Liu Wen Zhao took a liking to her cute and straightforward personality.
As Liu Wen Zhao’s parents died early and he has a spoilt younger sister to take care of, he learned to be mature, independent and hardworking. Due to his family background, he felt that he have no one else to rely on but himself. This also caused him to bottle up all the grievances he may have over the years. In particular, he was jealous of Jin Yuan Bao, for having wealth, status, and love that he may never receive despite his efforts.
As Yu Qi Ling was one of the few who cared for Liu Wen Zhao genuinely without expecting anything in return, he fell in love with her quickly.
Initially, Liu Wen Zhao still had some semblance of softheartedness and conscience. Despite colluding with the second prince to bring down the Jin family, he tried to spare Jin Yuan Bao’s life. He would try to convince the second prince that Jin Yuan Bao’s death is unnecessary, or create chances for Jin Yuan Bao to flee during life-threatening situations, even when he was ordered to go after him. When a servant, Xi Er, found out about him colluding with the second prince, he also attempted to negotiate for her life, though in vain.
Unfortunately, Liu Wen Zhao’s love for Yu Qi Ling and jealousy towards Jin Yuan Bao drove him into cruelty. He felt that more had to be done to take back what he considered his, including Yu Qi Ling. He no longer wished to spare Jin Yuan Bao, and resolved to have him killed.
Liu Wen Zhao’s hatred for Jin Yuan Bao became so great that he had attempted to kill him personally. He also tried to ruin the marriage between Jin Yuan Bao and Yu Qi Ling by manipulating Jin Yuan Bao’s mother, Liu Ru Yue, into arranging a concubine for Jin Yuan Bao. Unfortunately for him, his little sister, Qian Qian, wanted to be the concubine as she had always loved Jin Yuan Bao dearly. This caused him to be furious, as his sister’s lower status would mean the status between Yu Qi Ling and him will differ even more. Liu Wen Zhao then plotted to have Yu Qi Ling divorced with Jin Yuan Bao.
Even though many of his above actions caused suffering for Yu Qi Ling, it is undeniable that Liu Wen Zhao cared for and loved her in his own way. Once when Yu Qi Ling took a blow for Jin Yuan Bao and almost died, Liu Wen Zhao begged the second prince for help, risking his own well-being and position. Even though having Yu Qi Ling killed will help him greatly in his scheme to destabilize Jin family and gain power, Liu Wen Zhao adamantly refused to kill her. Instead, he always protected her, and tried to get her out of his schemes so that she can be unharmed.
In his quest to usurp Jin family and claim Yu Qi Ling as his wife, he sacrificed many people closed to him. His most loyal subordinate, Ah Fu, died along the way to aid in Liu Wen Zhao’s plot. He manipulated Yu Qi Ling to stir trouble within Jin family. His foster mother, Liu Ru Yue, was drove into committing suicide due to him framing her for crimes she never did, and sending threats to expose her secrets. Even his closest family member, Qian Qian, died under his sword as she shielded Jin Yuan Bao from Liu Wen Zhao’s attack.
However, Yu Qi Ling never once see him as anymore than a friend. Liu Wen Zhao had suggested multiple times that he was willing to care of Yu Qi Ling in Jin Yuan Bao’s place, and even tried to get on her adoptive mother’s good side by giving her gifts and taking care of the both of them. Yu Qi Ling rejected all his advances, but Liu Wen Zhao did not back down. Instead he proposed that the both of them get married, much to Yu Qi Ling’s chagrin.
Finally, Liu Wen Zhao was able to push Liu Ru Yue out of power, and forced Yu Qi Ling to rule over Jin family alongside him. He also forced Yu Qi Ling to treat Jin Yuan Bao as a lowly servant despite the two being obviously in love with each other. Nevertheless, Liu Wen Zhao remained persistent, insisting that Yu Qi Ling will see his good, and fall in love with him one day.
Of course, things doesn’t go as he planned, and Yu Qi Ling still stubbornly clung onto hope to reunite with Jin Yuan Bao, displaying concern for him whenever she could. This enraged Liu Wen Zhao and caused him to lose his temper, slapping her across the face multiple times before trying to force a kiss on her. He pressured Yu Qi Ling into a marriage with him, but it was later ruined by Jin Yuan Bao. Running out of patience, he finally made attempt to punish all of Jin family, including Yu Qi Ling, for defying him so many times.
Ultimately, Jin Yuan Bao managed to outsmart him and gained an upper hand. Liu Wen Zhao, being defeated, resigned to facing his impending prosecutions.
At first, I really sympathized with Liu Wen Zhao, as Jin Yuan Bao always behaved haughtily and rudely towards him, while he had to stomach the treatment to avoid quarrel. However, as the series progress, more and more of his actions I find inexcusable.
Most importantly, he actually slapped the female lead!! That’s a big no no for me. Even so, it is indisputable that he indeed love Yu Qi Ling very much, and was willing to go to great lengths for her in many occasions. It is just unfortunate that he loved the wrong person, for Yu Qi Ling will never look his way.
