The carpenter had crafted multiple chairs, one of which is used by Togawa Yoshiko, a renowned writer. Coincidentally, he is also a fan of her.

SPOILERS AND PERSONAL OPINION

To “become one” with Yoshiko, the carpenter built a compartment in Yoshiko’s enormous chair and lived in it. He only came out at night when everyone was asleep, presumably to get supplies and such. This way, he can be close to Yoshiko, and feel her contact whenever she seats on the chair to write her novels.

To convey his feelings to Yoshiko, he often wrote anonymous letters to her. Due to his animosity towards Yoshiko’s husband, the carpenter stabbed her husband through the seat when he rested on the chair, directly killing him.

This character is as creepy as it gets. Throughout the manga, his face was not revealed, but he is known to be ugly. He only appeared as a blurred face underneath the thick fabric of the chair. This is a yandere that anyone should run 10 miles from. Now, it makes me feel scared of gigantic chairs as well!
